DISCLAIMER

A few things to know.

How I write here, what I can and can’t help you with, and how to read what’s on this site.

This page is the long version of the disclaimers that show up in the footer of every page on this site. If you’ve read those, you’ve got the gist. This is for the times when you want a little more.

I’m not a doctor, lawyer, or financial planner

Nothing on this site is medical, legal, or financial advice. I’m not licensed in any of those fields, and even if I were, the people I write for are too different from each other for one piece of advice to fit them all.

If you’re considering a home modification, talk to a contractor or an occupational therapist. If you’re thinking about a will or healthcare directive, talk to an estate lawyer in your state. If you’re making a decision about insurance, retirement income, or long-term care funding, talk to a financial planner who has a fiduciary obligation to you.

I write about these topics because they matter and because nobody else seems willing to write about them in plain language. But I’m not the person to make your decisions for you, and you shouldn’t treat anything here as a substitute for advice from someone who knows your specific situation.

I share my own experience

A lot of what I write is based on my own life. The hospital story. The house I’m sorting out. The village I’m building on purpose. My experience is mine, not a template. Your health, your finances, your relationships, your circumstances are not mine. Read accordingly.

Some links are affiliate links

When I recommend a product or tool I’ve actually used, I sometimes link to it through an affiliate program. If you click through and buy something, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

I want you to know two things about that. First, an affiliate link doesn’t change what I recommend. I only point to things I’d put in my own house, and I won’t recommend anything I wouldn’t use myself. Second, I’ll tell you when a link is an affiliate link, every time, in the post itself.

If you’d rather not use my affiliate link, search for the product directly. I won’t be offended.

I link to other sites

Sometimes I link out to articles, products, or organizations that aren’t mine. I don’t control those sites, and I’m not responsible for what’s on them. They’re starting points for your own reading, not blanket endorsements of everything those sites say or sell.

Accuracy and changes

I write what’s true as far as I know at the time I write it. Laws change. Products get discontinued. Recommendations get better information later. If something on this site is out of date or wrong, write to me and I’ll update it.
